Guest Blogger - Crank: High Voltage

CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE (2009) ****
After surviving the brush with death that ended the first Crank film, top assassin Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) returns in this action-packed sequel to track down a ruthless Chinese mobster who has stolen his most prized possession: his heart. As the talented hit man scours Los Angeles for his enemy, he must continually jolt the mechanical ticker that beats within his chest -- otherwise, he's dead. Amy Smart and Dwight Yoakam co-star.

My Review: "Crank: High Voltage" may be the strangest movie I've ever seen. And I've seen "The Holy Mountain". Some kind of cracked masterpiece of post-post-postmodern filmmaking, it's hard to describe except to say that it takes everything that was great and weird and interesting about the original "Crank" and multiplies it by 10. It's hilarious, fast-paced, exciting, filled with entertaining supporting characters and great songs and it's thankfully very self-aware, with a level of graphic violence, graphic sexuality and crude humor (including every exaggerated racial stereotype one can think of) that is so joyfully ludicrous it must have been made that way on purpose. In fact, it's more like a Troma or John Waters film than any other action film I can think of (especially since it features cameos from Ron Jeremy, Lloyd Kaufman and Corey Haim!)

As is the case with any movie that is more or less the equivalent of a jackhammer to the brain it's not for everyone, but if you are on its wavelength, I guarantee you've never seen anything like it. Utter fucking insanity. Oh, and if you liked the crazy sex scene from the original "Crank", the sequel has one that makes that scene look like Jane frickin' Austen.
